Using sounds to convey complex information
نویسنده
چکیده
Mathematicians who are blind must rely on non-visual representations of mathematical material. This paper describes sound-based representations which have been designed, implemented and evaluated as part of the development of a computer workstation for blind mathematics students. Particular emphasis has been on supporting synthetic speech with non-verbal cues, in the forms of the prosodic component of the speech, 'algebra earcons' and spatialized sounds.

Responses of inferior colliculus neurons to double harmonic tones.
The auditory system can segregate sounds that overlap in time and frequency, if the sounds differ in acoustic properties such as fundamental frequency (f0). However, the neural mechanisms that underlie this ability are poorly understood. Responses of neurons in the inferior colliculus (IC) of the anesthetized chinchilla were measured. The stimuli were harmonic tones, presented alone (single har...
متن کاملAuditory observation of stepping actions can cue both spatial and temporal components of gait in Parkinson׳s disease patients
OBJECTIVES A common behavioural symptom of Parkinson׳s disease (PD) is reduced step length (SL). Whilst sensory cueing strategies can be effective in increasing SL and reducing gait variability, current cueing strategies conveying spatial or temporal information are generally confined to the use of either visual or auditory cue modalities, respectively. We describe a novel cueing strategy using...
متن کاملAn overview of auditory display to assist comprehension of molecular information
This paper presents an overview of auditory display (the use of non-speech sounds to convey information) applied to the study of molecular properties in human–computer interfaces, particularly in virtual environments. Chemistry researchers and students have difficulty in analysing and comprehending molecular structure and bonding and other biomolecular characteristics. Research reports that non...
متن کاملOctopus Cells in the Posteroventral Cochlear Nucleus Provide the Main Excitatory Input to the Superior Paraolivary Nucleus
Auditory streaming enables perception and interpretation of complex acoustic environments that contain competing sound sources. At early stages of central processing, sounds are segregated into separate streams representing attributes that later merge into acoustic objects. Streaming of temporal cues is critical for perceiving vocal communication, such as human speech, but our understanding of ...
متن کاملThe ‘audioview’ – Providing a Glance at Java Source Code
Having an overview of the structure of information has been shown to be necessary to effectively approach the reading of it. This paper describes how programming constructs can be represented using speech and non-speech audio to provide an important ‘glance’ at program source code prior to reading it. Three methods of representing program code are investigated, using pure speech, non-speech and...
